Deliberative Democracy Master-class and Workshop, John Dryzek, 30 June – 2 July 2010
John Dryzek will be leading a one-day master-class in deliberative democracy at the London School of Economics on 30 June 2010. Immediately following the master-class (1 and 2 July) there will be a two-day workshop of presentations on the theme ‘The epistemic potential and empirical realities of deliberative democracy’.
The schedule for the master-class on 30 June is as follows:
Session 1:
Revisiting the foundations of deliberative democracy
This will be based on the first half of his forthcoming OUP book, “Foundations and Frontiers of Deliberative Governance”. The concepts covered include:
- Legitimacy
- Representation
- Communication
- (Meta)Consensus
Session 2:
The deliberative system
This will look at a macro-systemic approach to deliberative democracy. It will discuss Mansbridge, Parkinson, Hendriks, Goodin, and Dryzek’s own recent work on this, with applications to public policy, comparative politics, and international relations.
