Medicare Issue Guide
Public Agenda.
Medicare, the national health-insurance plan for the elderly and disabled, is much like Social Security in terms of the people it serves, its popularity and its fragile future. The program serves 41 million Americans and costs more than $280 billion per year, nearly 13 percent of the federal budget. But current projections say Medicare could go broke under the weight of the aging baby boom generation by 2019 -- long before Social Security, which should stay solvent until 2042. Public Agenda Issue Guides or ?Citizen Choicework Guides? contain background information on the topic and present three different approaches to the issue for people to deliberate.
