How Facilitators Can Help

Here is a place where we can post opportunities for facilitators to help with Katrina relief activities. The following comments were posted on the NCDD Listserv by Tom Atlee.

FEMA and many othe rorganizations will have Grief Management and Critical Incident Debriefing teams working in the area, they will not come close to meeting all the needs.

Global Facilitators Service Corps (GFSC) (www.iaf-world.org )is coordinating several efforts to use its Field Volunteers to train, prepare and mentor other
professionals and caregivers in Disaster Intervention Facilitation

Larry and Bego Meeker, with a group of other area GFSC volunteers, arespearheading the efforts in the Texas Gulf area with local groups andorganizations to offer DIF Workshops different localities.

We have a dozen GFSC Virtual Mentors that are available 24/7 to support local professionals using our new Hot Conference audio-video-desktop virtual conferencing platform that is accessible to anyone with an internet connection, even a slow dialup.

We are in contact with other facilitator organizations such as the IAF
(International Association of Facilitators) and ICA (Institute for
Cultural Affairs) to offer support to their groups as needed.

We have many new materials now on the Global Facilitators Service Corps (GFSC) (www.iaf-world.org website on Grief Management, Critical Incident Management and Caring for the
Caregiver.

FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) has posted announcements for highly qualified "Conflict Resolution Specialists" and "Alternative Dispute Resolution Attorneys" to join a special ADR team to assist in disaster response and recovery. A total of 25 positions will be filled. This has been put on the fast track: Closing date for these positions is Monday, October 10th, 2005; Training will take place in late October or November; Deployment of some team members will take place soon thereafter. Excellent compensation, travel and per diem are included for all training and deployment assignments. Questions and resumes should be submitted ONLY to the email in the job opportunity announcements. If you are very experienced and qualified in mediation and conflict resolution, please submit your resume as soon as possible.

Dear Folks -
Early on, members of this listserve expressed concern about the post
Hurricane situation and wanted to do something. It's an important time down in New
Orleans and I hope that you'll consider these ideas :

One, would you please contact your U.S. senators and representatives and
make sure they have visited the post-hurricane Gulf South? It is critical that
those in Congress see the immense devastation that we still live with. At
this point, we're feeling the weight of unfulfilled promises from Bush - and
need much more help.
Two, would you throw a Mardi Gras dialogue on February 28th and celebrate
New Orleans with us?


This beloved city needs help - but this disaster only magnified issues faced
across the country. Here are some possibilities for dialogue - please make
other suggestions:
Federal responsibility after disasters
Poverty, race and implications for safety
Music and culture of oppressed people
Media responses in crises
Environmental vs cultural concerns
The meaning of life changing/society changing events


If you want to bring in some N.O. spirit, Mardi Gras parties usually have
most of these:
* costumes
* a traditional king cake
* a king and queen
* New Orleans music
* jambalaya, gumbo, etc.
* some beads to throw around
* purple, green and gold decorations

Thanks for helping to bring awareness. Also, please think of coming to visit
