Here is a place where we can post opportunities for facilitators to help with Katrina relief activities. The following comments were posted on the NCDD Listserv by Tom Atlee.

FEMA and many othe rorganizations will have Grief Management and Critical Incident Debriefing teams working in the area, they will not come close to meeting all the needs.

Global Facilitators Service Corps (GFSC) (www.iaf-world.org )is coordinating several efforts to use its Field Volunteers to train, prepare and mentor other
professionals and caregivers in Disaster Intervention Facilitation

Larry and Bego Meeker, with a group of other area GFSC volunteers, arespearheading the efforts in the Texas Gulf area with local groups andorganizations to offer DIF Workshops different localities.

We have a dozen GFSC Virtual Mentors that are available 24/7 to support local professionals using our new Hot Conference audio-video-desktop virtual conferencing platform that is accessible to anyone with an internet connection, even a slow dialup.
www.iaf-world.org

We are in contact with other facilitator organizations such as the IAF
(International Association of Facilitators) and ICA (Institute for
Cultural Affairs) to offer support to their groups as needed.
If you are a professional facilitator, you can enter the GFSC Mentored
Pathways Field Volunteer program to prepare yourself for future
volunteer opportunities. For more information, go to: http://www.ica-international.org

Changing the Public Discourse: Resources at Tolerance.org

Sept. 22, 2005

-----------------------------------------
DECODING KATRINA: A Critical Debriefing
-----------------------------------------
*** UNDERSTANDING THE AFTERMATH ***
The hurricane that devastated Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama left tragic destruction in its wake. It also reopened this nation's troubling and difficult conversation about race, poverty and the gulfs that divide us. Tolerance.org offers a three-part series:

:: DECODING THE LANGUAGE: A look back at how race and poverty were-- and weren't -- made part of discussion in Katrina's immediate aftermath.

http://newsletter.tolerance.org/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eqh20GzujW0E1S0Dij20EB

:: ASSESSING THE NATIONAL DISCOURSE: A deeper look at why we, as a country, struggle with such conversations.

http://newsletter.tolerance.org/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eqh20GzujW0E1S0Dij30EC

:: CHANGING THE NATIONAL DISCOURSE: What can we do, as individuals or communities, to deepen and improve the conversation?

http://newsletter.tolerance.org/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eqh20GzujW0E1S0Dij40ED

Tolerance.org also offers additional Katrina-related resources:

:: HOW TO HELP: Emergency response agencies, churches and nonprofit organizations have mobilized to help the millions of people affected by Katrina. There are many ways you can help,too.

http://newsletter.tolerance.org/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eqh20GzujW0E1S0Dij50EE

:: TEACHING KATRINA: Several groups have offered classroom lesson plans in Katrina's wake. Curriculum specialist/writer Jeff Sapp offers a critical review.

PostPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2006 4:54 pm?? ?Post subject: Current ideas for New Orleans follow-up Reply with quote??? ???

Here are some important followup ideas for Hurricane Katrina from the ncdd discussion listserve.

Date: February 03 2006
Subject: Mardi Gras dialogue party
From: Julianna Padgett (Reply ONLY to Sender)
Back to: NCDD Discussion

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Folks -
Early on, members of this listserve expressed concern about the post
Hurricane situation and wanted to do something. It's an important time down in New
Orleans and I hope that you'll consider these ideas :

One, would you please contact your U.S. senators and representatives and
make sure they have visited the post-hurricane Gulf South? It is critical that
those in Congress see the immense devastation that we still live with. At
this point, we're feeling the weight of unfulfilled promises from Bush - and
need much more help.
Two, would you throw a Mardi Gras dialogue on February 28th and celebrate
New Orleans with us?

This beloved city needs help - but this disaster only magnified issues faced
across the country. Here are some possibilities for dialogue - please make
other suggestions:
Federal responsibility after disasters
Poverty, race and implications for safety
Music and culture of oppressed people
Media responses in crises
Environmental vs cultural concerns
The meaning of life changing/society changing events

If you want to bring in some N.O. spirit, Mardi Gras parties usually have
most of these:
* costumes
* a traditional king cake
* a king and queen
* New Orleans music
* jambalaya, gumbo, etc.
* some beads to throw around
* purple, green and gold decorations

Thanks for helping to bring awareness. Also, please think of coming to visit
down here - there is a profound balance of loss and life to experience. If
you can't come to Mardi Gras, then plan to come down for Jazz Fest (April 28
- May7) or any other time you feel like dancing (or helping). It will help
us get back on our feet, hopefully with more strength than before. Let me know.

May all be very safe.

Many thanks,
Julianna Padgett

My friend, Mark Morris, wrote this....
"send us your hearts, send us your poet laureate, send us every last
compassionate conservative, help us rebuild our levees - get the Dutch!, help us
protect our coast and restore our wetlands, help us rebuild our housing stock
without exploiting us, help us clean our land, give us phone service, mail
service, stoplights, notice our power company declared bankruptcy, bring in
planners, listen to our visionaries ?ƒ¢â?‚¬â?€?œ not just the official ones, ignore media
misinformation, be our friend, feel our tears, be our family, be our nation.
Please, hold us in your prayers."
