Online Deliberative Experiences

I am wondering if others have found that online work seems "incomplete" in terms of more detailed development of concepts? It is almost a given that online work is great at brainstorming and list-building. I have seen less of the in-depth exchange of experiences that generate empathetic understanding. In my online experiences at seemed like there were participants who instantly "got it" and they often seemed impatient with those who were struggling with process and format. Is this a matter of different ways of learning or a matter of a cognitive shift driven by technology?

My sense is that we are still struggling to develop online methodologies that can be as effective as the face to face modalities that people have worked on for so many years. The tech is so new in terms of mainstream acceptance, and still very rough. At the same time, the potential for online dialogue is obviously enormous. Read Clay Shirky's book "Here Comes Everybody" for a good sense of how revolutionary this technology potentially is.

I have begun hosting a series of world cafe conference calls using the Maestro Cafe online control panel, which allows me to have participants raise their hand to speak and also to split people up into small breakout sessions and then shuffle those around before returning everyone to the main group, just as in a regular face to face world cafe. My sense is that there is much more that technology could do to facilitate these calls and the possibilities are very exciting.
