Beth is a strategic public involvement practitioner with more than 20 years’ experience working with public agencies, private firms and nonprofits/NGOs on a broad variety of stakeholder processes, projects and issues. Since founding Waterford, Inc. in 1996, her experience includes 12 years’ experience designing, facilitating and implementing participatory processes in support of land use, transportation and environmental projects.
She is the founder and chief learning officer at PublicDecisions.com, which connects people with ideas and knowledge for enhancing the effectiveness of stakeholder engagement, through an array of online training courses, professional development events and other programs (some of which take place in virtual worlds such as Second Life®). Beth is one of a small number of public involvement practitioners who are conversant in the use of both Web 2.0/Social Media and Web 3.0/Immersive Technologies in support of engagement.
In 2005 she co-founded the Center for Voter Deliberation of Northern Virginia with Bill Corbett, a nonprofit that conducts community deliberations with area youth as moderators. She is a Life Member of the International Association for Public Participation, where she served on the board and co-founded the Research Committee. She also is a member of the National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation, the American Public Health Association and the American Society for Training & Development. Since 2008, Beth has chaired the American Planning Association’s (APA) International Division. She’s played a leadership role in the development of the Divisions’ two award-winning programs, specifically its webinar series and the 2009 World Town Planning Day Online Conference. She also is a co-founder of the APA Public Engagement Interest Group.
She is an award-winning author and a noted researcher at the local, national and international levels, where her research focuses on engagement practices in the fields of sustainability, transportation, the environment and health. Her dissertation is on the practice of public participation, based on an extensive multi-year, 12-country data collection effort involving a 17-member international research team for which Beth served as project manager on behalf of IAP2 and the Charles F. Kettering Foundation.
