Applications Due April 15 for CONTACT Graduate Training Program in Conflict Transformation

Eline Potoski of the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont wanted us to share an announcement with you about the acclaimed CONTACT Summer Institute. CONTACT (Conflict Transformation Across Cultures) is a three-week 3-credit graduate training program in conflict transformation that provides skills and practical tools for reconciling intercommunal and intergroup conflict. The program?’s mix of participants includes diverse individuals from a broad range of countries and regions around the world (six continents in 2004) and often includes individuals from opposing sides of a particular conflict. CONTACT's participatory, experiential approach draws upon the direct experiences of participants and facilitators, and fosters both the reflective awareness and hands-on competence required to guide the process of reconstructing broken group relations.

CONTACT Offers:
- A theoretical foundation in the political, structural, and psychological sources and dynamics of violent conflict
- Practical, hands-on training
- Skills development in conflict analysis, coexistence, and transformative interventions
- Enhancement of interpersonal, leadership, and technological skills and competencies
- Continuous support, supervision, and feedback from faculty and peers
- Creation of a network of international peacebuilders assisting each other across cultures

Appropriate candidates for this program include individuals working in:
- community development
- mediation
- nongovernmental and nonprofit organizations
- social services
- human rights and social justice
- human services or religious organizations
- schools (teachers, graduate students, administrators)
- public agencies

Graduate Certificate and Degree Programs Participants who would like a more thorough grounding in conflict transformation can continue their studies in CONTACT?’s Graduate Certificate Program or the Joint Certificate/MA in Conflict Transformation at the School for International Training (SIT). The Certificate program includes the Summer Institute and a fourth week in residence followed by a practicum in the field, coursework delivered through interactive distance learning, and group seminars, held either at a regional field site or at SIT. Participants can specialize in one of three tracks: Civil Society Inititatives in Peacebuilding; the Psychosocial Foundations of Peacebuilding; and Peacebuilding in the Regional Context (this year?’s region is Africa).

The School for International Training (SIT) is the accredited college of World Learning and one of the oldest private, nonprofit, international educational service organizations in the world.
