ICMA to Hold Webcast on Collaborative Problem Solving

The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) will conduct a webcast called "Collaborative Problem Solving and Consensus Building: Effective Approaches for Watershed Protection and Restoration," on April 21, 2004. The webcast will feature Tanya Denckla, Senior Associate, Institute for Environmental Negotiation, University of Virginia, who will provide an introduction to consensus building techniques, and watershed organization and local government representatives who will provide case studies demonstrating improved watershed management through collaborative problem solving and consensus building. July Facilitation & Consensus Course Offered in Northern Italy

The International Institute for Facilitation and Consensus and Ecovillage Torri Superiore are offering a course titled ?“Facilitation and Consensus?” July 2-8, 2004, in Northern Italy. Participants in this course will learn skills that will serve them well in every aspect of their lives, including the impact of rank and privilege on group process, dealing with ?“difficult people,?” avoiding wasted time in meetings, building cohesion among group members, and creating an atmosphere of trust and safety. Other topics will include how to balance participation between the talkative and the timid, handling ?“experts?” and dealing with personal attacks. Less dramatic, but perhaps even more practical tools include agenda planning, meeting site preparation, ground rules meeting evaluation.

Courses Offered on Using Democratic Principles

The Study Circles Resource Center has partnered with the NeighborWorks Training Institute to offer two courses in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in May 2004: ?“Using Democratic Principles to Facilitate Community Dialogue and Support Citizen Action?” (May 6-7) and ?“Using Democratic Principles to Initiate and Build Neighborhood Revitalization Efforts?” (May 5). Through both courses, participants will learn how to recruit ?“hard-to-reach?” residents; identify and evaluate facilitators; connect citizens, stakeholders, and resources to support action efforts; and apply democratic principles to neighborhood organizations and the routine of community decision-making. May Certification Course in Charrette Planning Offered

In May 2004, for the first time, the National Charrette Institute is offering the "Introduction to Dynamic Planning: The Charrette in Context" half-day seminar in conjunction with the "Continuing Dynamic Planning: Professional Tools and Techniques" 2-day intensive course.
