A program of the Bush Foundation (www.bushfoundation.org), the Bush Leadership Fellows Program seeks accomplished, motivated individuals from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, or northwestern Wisconsin who are eager to prepare themselves for greater leadership responsibilities within their communities and professions. Applicants are invited to propose academic or self-designed learning experiences that will help them attain goals that they set for themselves. The program encourages applications that will expand fellows' experiences beyond the familiar to learning environments that might be inaccessible without a fellowship. Fellowships support learning experiences that may include academic course work, internships, self-designed study programs, or various combinations of these and other kinds of learning experiences. Dialogue Mapping Workshop Coming Up in Washington, DC

This July 19-20, 2006 Dr. Jeff Conklin will hold a workshop on Dialogue Mapping in Washington DC. This facilitation technique gets away from herding the group through a series of steps, focusing the participants instead on listening carefully, speaking clearly, and learning together about the issues and concerns they bring to the table. The facilitator/dialogue mapper engages the group with a map of their comments that he or she builds on the fly. The map is a shared display -- paper taped to the wall or software projected on a screen. The "secret sauce" of dialogue mapping is the use of the Issue Based Information System (IBIS) notation: Questions, Ideas, and Pros/Cons. The IBIS framework frees the group from tyranny of agreement. Conflicting information and points of view reside next to each other in the map, reflecting the diversity of the stakeholders and the complexity of a wicked problem. Training in Performance-Based Youth Decision-Making Coming Up in Nevada

ZIPoPo is an interactive performance program that combines scriptwriting, acting, directing and facilitating to teach ethical decision making skills through audience participation. ZIPoPo was developed in Russia, was shown on 22 television stations there and is now in 62 countries around the world. Shamil Fattakhov, the program creator, will be here from Russia to do the training. The program is ideal for teachers, counselors and youth programs. The program could be presented as part of school activities or after school programs. The manual includes the discussion and ethical decision making portions but the scriptwriting, acting and directing portions are only available in the training program. The workshop will be held from 1 pm, Wednesday, August 16 to noon, Sunday, August 20, 2006 in Reno, Nevada. Nonviolent Communication Training Coming Up in New York

Rita Herzog and Roberta Wall will lead a week-long workshop called "Nonviolent Communication: Learning the Language of Compassion" from July 10-16 at the Elat Chayyim retreat center in Accord NY. In this week-long workshop participants will learn and practice the art of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) as developed by Marshall Rosenberg. Nonviolent Communication is seen as a powerful tool for peacefully resolving differences at personal, professional, and political levels. These skills have been successfully applied to parents and families, health care, educational, and work settings, social services, police and prisons, and social change organizations. Using compassionate communication, the workshop will connect to teachings about speech and listening within Judaism, and incorporate Jewish rituals to connect. Green Communities Announces Charrette Grants Program

Created by Enterprise Community Partners in partnership with the Natural Resources Defense Council, Green Communities (http://enterprisefoundation.org/resources/green/) is a five-year, $555 million initiative to build more than 8,500 environmentally healthy homes for low-income families in the United States. Green Communities is now offering charrette grants of up to $5,000 each for green affordable housing developers who want to convene intense working sessions with the development team and others who share an interest in promoting health and livability. A Green Communities charrette will involve an intense working session that brings together a diverse group of housing development professionals as well as funders, policy makers, and community stakeholders (where possible) to integrate sustainable green design principles into affordable housing developments. Enterprise will award grants to cover the cost of facilitating a charrette during pre-development and to cover the cost of facilitating a post-construction sustainability training session. AACJP Conference On Restorative Justice Coming Up in Miami

The American Association of Community Justice Professionals (AACJP) will be holding a conference from June 10-14 in Miami Florida. The conference will be organized around three series of workshops. One set of workshops will focus on treatment and assessment strategies that can be used by professionals in human services, community corrections, juvenile justice or other settings when the desired result is changing behaviors or policies supportive of behavioral change. A second set of workshops will address best practices for victims of crime. These workshops will look at practices that range from understanding how to work with an individual victim to implementing systemic change in communities. Mid South Delta Leaders Program Now Accepting Applications

Established in 1997 by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (www.wkkf.org), the Mid South Delta Initiative (www.msdi.org) is a long-term economic, community, and leadership development effort focused on fifty-five contiguous counties and parishes along the Mississippi River in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. As part of this effort, the Mid South Delta Leadership program is building a network of diverse leaders willing to work across economic, social, and racial divides to shape policies and strategies for education and economic development in the Delta Region. MSDL is currently accepting applications for its third class. MSDL consists of three eighteen-month classes, which include a series of three-day learning retreats, study-travel tours to each of the three state capitals, a Delta Heritage Tour, and meetings of issue-based teams. Forty-five class members, fifteen from each state, will participate in a curriculum that is designed to improve the leadership, management, and communication skills of its participants. CONTACT (Conflict Transformation Across Cultures) is a three-week 3-credit graduate training program in conflict transformation that provides skills and practical tools for reconciling intercommunal and intergroup conflict. Three Dialogue Mapping Workshops Coming Up

Three Dialogue Mapping Workshops, lead by Dr. Jeff Conklin, will be held this April 18-19 in Redwood City, California (SF Bay Area); May 23-24 in Birmingham, England; and July 18-19 in Washington, DC. This 2-day workshop is highly engaging and interactive and teaches the core skills of a new facilitation technique. As with any art form, dialogue mapping is challenging to describe but easy to comprehend experientially. This technique gets away from herding the group through a series of steps, focusing the participants instead on listening carefully, speaking clearly, and learning together about the issues and concerns they bring to the table. The facilitator/dialogue mapper engages the group with a map of their comments that he or she builds on the fly. The map is a shared display ... paper taped to the wall or software projected on a screen. The "secret sauce" of dialogue mapping is the use of the Issue Based Information System (IBIS) notation: Questions, Ideas, and Pros/Cons. The IBIS framework frees the group from tyranny of agreement. Conflicting information and points of view reside next to each other in the map, reflecting the diversity of the stakeholders and the complexity of a wicked problem. PhD Position Available in Urban Planning

The Program in Urban Affairs and Planning, School of Public and International Affairs at Virginia Tech has an open position in "Improving Collaborative Decision-making Through Learning Networks." Faculty in the Program in Urban Affairs and Planning and in the College of Natural Resources at Virginia Tech are seeking qualified doctoral applicants for the PhD in Environmental Design and Planning program who are interested in pursuing research on learning networks, an innovative collaborative approach to restoring ecological health at the landscape scale. Specifically, we are partnering with The Nature Conservancy to examine social learning, organizational design, and diffusion of innovation within TNC?’s national Fire Learning Network (http://tncfire.org/training_usfln.htm). They currently have multi-year funding to support a new candidate to join a faculty ?– graduate student team pursuing this research. In addition to receiving financial support, successful candidates will co-author journal articles with project PI?’s, receive training in grant-writing, have the opportunity to teach at the undergraduate level and attend at least one academic conference each year. Criteria for Selection include a background in interpretive social science research, including interviewing and discourse analysis, as well as environment and natural resources are strongly desired. One World Training in Deliberative Dialogue Coming Up

On March 20 and 21, 2006, One World Inc. (OWI) will offer a training workshop on Deliberative Dialogue in Ottawa, Canada. The Deliberative Dialogue methodology is an innovative, proven approach to engage citizens and stakeholders in productive discussions on public policy. The latest addition is "Solving Tough Problems," led by Adam Kahane and Grady McGonagill. This module is an experiential introduction to the Change Lab developed by Generon Consulting and based on the U-process. Intro to Dialogue Education Training Coming Up in Vancouver, BC

Simon Fraser University's Centre for Dialogue will be offering the training workshop Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach: An introduction to dialogue education from Monday, May 1-Thursday, May 4, 2006, 9-5pm. Based upon the field research and teaching of Dr. Jane Vella, this four-day workshop provides the building blocks of the dialogue education approach to curriculum design and facilitation skills. By switching the focus from 'what the instructor says about a topic' to 'what the participants will do with the content to demonstrate their learning,' adult learners are invited to take new ideas, apply them and reflect on their significance for their own lives and context. After engaging in a participatory discussion of the principles and practices of dialogue education, you will co-design and co-teach two 40-minute practice teaching sessions on a topic of your choice. You will then receive feedback from the facilitators and the other participants, and be able to watch a videotape of your session. EPA Calls for Proposals for Community Involvement Conference

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently is soliciting presentation proposals for its 2006 Community Involvement Conference and Training. Conducting Complex Meetings Course Offered by Common Ground

As part of University of California, Davis Extension, Common Ground helps government entities, agencies and private- and public-sector organizations come together to find unique solutions to challenging and complex issues. This winter Common Ground will be offering two, one-day courses in Managing Complex Meetings for public- and private-sector professionals who wish to build their capacity for collaboration and conflict resolution. Controversial issues, public settings and large groups of people can quickly turn a simple meeting into a complex and challenging situation. These courses will provide a broad repertoire of tools for organizing and running potentially-troublesome meetings. In the first session, participants will gain the skills to engage stakeholders in the design of meeting agendas and to match the format of meetings to its goals. Two Upcoming Workshops at the Simon Fraser University Dialogue Program

The Simon Fraser University Dialogue Program has two exciting workshops coming up. First, a workshop entitled Learning from the Citizens' Assembly: A conversation with Jack Blaney will be held Monday, November 21, 2005, from 8-9:30am at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue, Asia Pacific Hall. For Registration or information call 604.291.5100. In 2003, an independent, non-partisan assembly of 160 randomly selected citizens from across British Columbia gathered together to understand and redesign the province's electoral system. Led by Jack Blaney, Simon Fraser University president emeritus, this Citizen's Assembly produced a novel system called BC-STV, which was narrowly defeated in a provincial referendum. Despite this setback, critics and admirers alike acknowledge that the work of the Assembly has set the province on the path to electoral reform and demonstrated the power of public engagement in creating and evaluating new policies. Jack Blaney will reflect in conversation on the workings of the assembly and the applicability of this model to future public initiatives.

Open Space Workshop Coming Up in San Francisco

With ten days to go until the Canadian Conference on Dialogue and Deliberation in Ottawa, organizers have sent out answers to their top three most frequently asked questions. First, people are asking,"Can I still register for a pre-Conference training session?". The answer is yes ?– and up to October 26, as long as space permits. The website has been adjusted to reflect the two sessions that will be on offer, at extremely low prices - one on Best Practices in Public Consultation and the other on Intermodal Engagement: How to Marry Online and Traditional Consultation and Dialogue. A second FAQ is "How much longer will registration for the Conference remain open?" The Conference registration is already high?…and people can register right up to opening on the evening of October 27. Open Space Training Coming Up in Nanaimo, BC

Online Deliberation Workshop Coming Up Nov 17-18

The Ohio State University Center for Interdisciplinary Law and Policy Studies, along with the Department of Communication, the City and Regional Planning Program, and the Ohio Supercomputer Center, are holding two-day, hands-on workshop to introduce government personnel and other interested citizens to the emerging world of web applications to foster citizen input into public policy making. In addition to hearing distinguished keynote speakers and panelists, participants will engage in a mock on-line public policy deliberation using new software tools developed at Carnegie Mellon University for assisting decision making through online citizen group conversation, and engage in small group activities and brainstorming sessions. They have found a new home with the Suquamish UCC Church and they've participated in several significant national and international conferences this summer, including the 11th International Noetic Sciences Conference. Leah also writes "One of my most memorable events this summer occurred at our Annual Gathering when I had the honor of introducing and listening to Fred Whitaker and Beth Angeline, co-founders of The Compassion Project at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School in Louisville, Kentucky. This program - the first middle school curriculum modeled on Compassionate Listening - has inspired us to find ways to bring this program to other teachers and schools." Lower East Side Tenement Museum Seeks Dialogue Facilitators

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum was founded in 1988 to "promote tolerance and historical perspective through the presentation and interpretation of the variety of immigrant and migrant experiences on Manhattan's Lower East Side." The Museum is seeking part-time facilitators for the "Kitchen Conversations" public dialogue program, a one-hour, facilitated discussion available to visitors after select tours. "Kitchen Conversations" are rare and exciting opportunities for Museum visitors to engage in a dialogue and with visitors from around the world on press immigration-related topics raised by the tours of the museum. Facilitators will use discussion guidelines developed by the Museum to conduct focused discussions with groups of 10-15 visitors at the Museum about their personal experiences, responses to the tour, and perspectives on larger immigration-related issues. IAP2 Invites Applications for Certificate Program Trainers

The International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) has just announced they are accepting applications from individuals wishing to become licensed as Certificate Program trainers. IAP2 will be offering all three certificate courses at the annual conference in Portland, Oregon, USA in October 2005. If you have not completed the courses this is an excellent opportunity to do (completion of all three certificate courses is a requirement for Candidate Trainers). In addition, IAP2 would like to offer new Candidate Trainers the opportunity to audit the certificate courses at the annual conference in Portland, Oregon, USA in October 2005. This will give new Candidate Trainers an opportunity to become more familiar with the course content before applying to attend a future IAP2 Academy. Join the Compassionate Listening Project in Israel-Palestine this November

From November 6-20, 2005 the Compassionate Listening Project will lead a delegation of citizens to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. The two-week journey will begin in Jerusalem with an intensive training in Compassionate Listening. Two New Training Opportunities in Online Engagement Coming Up This Fall

NCDD member Alexandra Samuel just told us about two new opportunities to learn about online engagement techniques. Beginning in September 2005, the Collaborative Learning & Innovation program at Simon Fraser University is offering two new programs. The Online Stakeholder Engagement Teleforum (www.sfu.ca/cscd/cli/online_engagement_teleforum) is a series of six monthly conference calls for engagement practitioners. These monthly discussions will focus on collaborative knowledge-building among participants in order to create a learning community that is useful to the work of its members. AAC&U Announces Conference on Student Learning and Civic Engagement

In conjunction with its conference this fall, the American Association of Colleges and Universities has organized a parallel working conference on "The Civic Engagement Imperative: Student Learning and the Public Good" in Providence, RI from November 10-12, 2005. The conference aims to clarify definitions and outcomes for civic engagement, explore new scholarship on coherent and effective civic engagement programs across the curriculum and co-curriculum, and consider innovative collaborations between educational and community leaders. VOMA Conference Coming Up in October

The International Victim Offender Mediation Association (VOMA) is an information resource, activist and membership organization dedicated to advancing the principles and effective practice of restorative justice. Nonviolent Communication Workshop Series Coming Up in El Cerrito, CA

NCDD member Sharda Miller has just announced she will be offering a nonviolent communication-afternoon series this summer. The workshops will be an introduction to Marshall Rosenberg?’s Nonviolent Communication (NVC). NVC offers specific skills that lead to heartful, honest and authentic communication without blame or judgment. The class will be small in order to allow plenty of time for sharing and practice. Workshop on Non-Violent Communication Coming Up in Cambridge, MA

"Creating Compassionate Families & Schools" is a weekend workshop from August 12-14, co-sponsored by Nonviolent Communication Boston, Cambridge Peace Commission, the Center for Peaceable Schools at Lesley University, and the Institute for Peaceable Communities. The focus of the workshop is learning and practicing the consciousness and skill-set of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), as developed by Marshall Rosenberg. Fullbright Grants Available for Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies

The Fulbright Scholar Program is now offering 117 lecturing, research, and lecturing/research awards in political science for the 2006-2007 academic year. These include awards specifically for peace studies and conflict resolution in India, Korea, Nepal, Philippines, and Ukraine. Awards for both faculty and professionals range from two months to an academic year. Many awards specify project and host institution, but there are also a number of open "All Disciplines" awards that allow candidates to propose their own project and determine their host institution affiliation. Foreign language skills are needed in some countries, but most Fulbright lecturing assignments are in English. The application deadline for Fulbright traditional lecturing and research grants worldwide is August 1, 2005. U.S. citizenship is required. The Compassionate Listening Project (www.compassionatelistening.org) has just announced its Advanced Training Series for 2005-2006. Fielding Graduate University just announced its second certificate course in Dialogue, Deliberation and Public Engagement. Call for Volunteers for first-ever Canadian Conference on D&D

Inspired by NCDD's 2002 conference, a group of energetic Canadians have been spearheading a Canadian Conference on Dialogue & Deliberation. Well, they just announced that the first-ever "C2D2" will take place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, October 27-30 at the Ottawa Congress Centre, with a day of pre-conference trainings on October 27.

C2D2 is modeling its conference planning process after NCDD's collaborative approach to planning, and is asking for volunteers to step forward to serve on their various planning teams. CONTACT (Conflict Transformation Across Cultures) is a three-week 3-credit graduate training program in conflict transformation that provides skills and practical tools for reconciling intercommunal and intergroup conflict. Online Course in Transforming Civil Conflict Offered by Bradford University

We heard about a new and interesting online course offered in February and March of 2005. "Transforming Civil Conflicts"is an online course developed by The Network University in cooperation with Bradford University. The four-week course familiarises participants with contemporary theories of conflict and conflict resolution, provides them with a range of relevant information on conflict on the Internet, and practical issues and debates from within the field. Participants are brought together in a 'learning community' with coaches and experts with a professional interest in conflict (transformation). Authentic Leadership at the Shambhala Institute next June

If any of you in the Northwest or in Western Canada haven't yet heard of the Wosk Center for Dialogue in Vancouver, you're in for a treat. The Wosk Center makes me wish I lived on the other side of the country.

I just received an update from Nicole Mah of the Wosk Center, outlining some of their upcoming activities and programs. A Dialogue Network meets each month to dialogue about dialogue, which is cool enough - but also their 2004 Dialogue Maker's Series is launching on Sept. 10 with a dialogue inspired by the Dalai Lama's visit to Vancouver. I received an email today from Rob Corcoran, National Director of Hope in the Cities, announcing HITC's new Connecting Communities Fellowship Program, which graduated its first class this year. This five-part residential program grew out of HITC's experience with racial reconciliation in Richmond and in their consultations with communities throughout the U.S. over the past ten years. CONTACT Summer Institute Offers Four Week-Long Electives

The School for International Training's CONTACT program - Conflict Transformation Across Cultures - is a professional development program designed to strengthen and support the community-building, coexistence and conflict intervention and resolution efforts of peacebuilders from the United States and around the world. Participants can enroll in a 2-3 week residential Summer Institute at SIT?’s Vermont campus (this year taking place from May 31 to June 18, 2004), or the Graduate Certificate program, which includes the Summer Institute, an additional week in residence at SIT's Vermont campus (this year from June 19 - June 23) followed by a practicum, coursework delivered through interactive distance learning, and a seminar, held either at a regional field site or at SIT. As part of the June Summer Institute, CONTACT is offering several electives that can be taken independently. Katherine Burke of InterPlay emailed me today about a June 5, 2004 "Theatre for Dialogue" Workshop that will be offered in Lafayette, Indiana at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation. According to Katherine, this fun, engaging, and information-packed workshop will explore the many uses of interactive theatre in classrooms, conference rooms, therapy groups, and more. Compassionate Listening Project Fosters Jewish-German Reconciliation

The Compassionate Listening Project will offer a unique training in the Washington DC area October 10-18, 2004. "Peaceworker Bootcamp" to be Held this Summer in Canada

A bootcamp of sorts for peaceworkers and potential peaceworkers will be held this summer in an old mountain range two hours west of Ottawa, Canada. The Peaceworker Bootcamp is an intensive 6-day hands-on learning experience in the Canadian wilderness for people who are or wish to become peaceworkers.
