PeaceWeb to Hold Summer Workshop Series in Tucson
PeaceWeb's summer workshop series, "Building Peace From the Inside Out," will take place this July and August in Tucson, Arizona. The registration fee for each of the five workshops is $99. PeaceWeb has a 22-year history as The National Conference on Peacemaking and Conflict Resolution (NCPCR), which produced 11 international gatherings of adult and youth peacemakers.
PeaceWeb's southwest region is sponsoring this summer workshop series, which includes workshops with these compelling titles: Acting for a Change; Being Your Centerpiece: Creating Peace By Honoring Yourself First And Foremost; Visioning: Utilizing Tribal Practices For Dispute Resolution; Untangling The Knot: Overcoming Obstacles To Agreement; and Exploring the Enneagram: Seeing Into the Heart of Conflict. University of Maryland's OHRP Hosts Second Practical Conference for Diversity Professionals
I received an announcement on Wednesday about the second year of an exciting equity and diversity initiative of the Office of Human Relations Programs (OHRP) at the University of Maryland, College Park. The initiative is called the "Institute on Implementation and Institutionalization" or, for short, the I3. The I3 will be held July 7-11, 2004 in Washington, D.C. Building on OHRP's collaborative Ford Foundation funded Diversity Blueprint project with the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U), the I3 offers PRACTICAL strategies for professionals in higher education in the development and realization of a broad-based and campus-wide equity and diversity agenda. Additionally, the I3 will feature two "Hot Topics:"
(1) Special Segments on Selective Admissions in Higher Education one year after the Supreme Court decision; and (2) Hate Crime Response Protocols on Campus.

"Peaceworker Bootcamp" to be Held this Summer in Canada
A bootcamp of sorts for peaceworkers and potential peaceworkers will be held this summer in an old mountain range two hours west of Ottawa, Canada. The camp will be offered four times: May 30 - June 4, June 24-29, July 18-23, and August 8-13. The Peaceworker Bootcamp is an intensive 6-day hands-on learning experience in the Canadian wilderness for people who are or wish to become peaceworkers. The Peaceworker Bootcamp will introduce participants to the knowledge and skills necessary in preparing for voluntary or paid work in the fields of humanitarian, peacebuilding, and development assistance. Online Summer School on Conflict Transformation
The Network University is offering an Online Summer School on Conflict Transformation. Eight Jewish-Palestinian Peace Camps to be Held in North America this Summer
An email I received today from my friends Libby and Len Traubman outlined the growth of Jewish-Palestinian Peace Camps in the U.S. and Canada. As Len and Libby write, "Most Palestinians and Jews have never had an in-depth, sustained relationship, in the Middle East and worldwide. This "big disconnect" allows them to maintain stereotypes and dehumanize each other -- staying at a distance, doing what they're doing to one another at this moment. Thus the urgent need for a greatly enlarged public peace process to discover the "other" equally human, equally excellent persons -- expand our identification to include each other. July Facilitation & Consensus Course Offered in Northern Italy
The International Institute for Facilitation and Consensus and Ecovillage Torri Superiore are offering a course titled ?“Facilitation and Consensus?” July 2-8, 2004, in Northern Italy. Participants in this course will learn skills that will serve them well in every aspect of their lives, including the impact of rank and privilege on group process, dealing with ?“difficult people,?” avoiding wasted time in meetings, building cohesion among group members, and creating an atmosphere of trust and safety. Other topics will include how to balance participation between the talkative and the timid, handling ?“experts?” and dealing with personal attacks. Less dramatic, but perhaps even more practical tools include agenda planning, meeting site preparation, ground rules meeting evaluation.

Bauen Camp 2004 to Focus on Arts-Based Civic Dialogue
Located in the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming, the Bauen Camp teaches young people ages 13?–18 how arts can be used to build social creativity and responsibility. The camp will focus on arts-based civic dialogue during this summer's sessions, July 2?–August 9, 2004. The artist staff will include Animating Democracy staff member Andrea Assaf; scholar Ferdinand Lewis, who participated as a writer in Animating Democracy?’s Critical Perspectives project; and Community Art Network's co-director, artist Bob Leonard. Professionals are invited to select outstanding young people from their projects and communities to be a part of the 2004 program. Applications are due May 15, 2004. Scholarships and internships will be offered.
